Join us for the weekend of November 4th-6th, 2022.
We will be at Clark College in Vancouver, WA on Friday evening, all-day Saturday, Saturday Night with a host Art Task PARTY, and on Sunday morning for the Keynote including a few more workshops!
The Keynote this year is with the amazing Dr. John Spencer!
The WAEA Conference Falls on a weekend already full of ART in Vancouver. First Friday Gallery Walk is an open gallery walk in downtown Vancouver AND Clark County Open Studios is an open studio tour of local artists in their home/studios selling their wares and discussing their practice and studio. There is time built into the day before dinner on Saturday, and on Sunday to travel around and see the downtown Vancouver artists and pick out others to see on your way out of town in greater Clark County!
All that...AND workshops AND speakers galore!
Not the mention a hosted ART Task Party Saturday night (after dinner on your own in town)!
Did I mention SWAG bags and a VENDOR FAIR populated with many vendors eager to see you face to face again?
The WAEA is providing a Hotel discount code @ the Heathman Lodge!
See Lodging and Travel TAB above for more information.

Here is a sneak peek of our Fall Conference keynote speaker, John Spencer, and some of his work.
John Spencer has authored a variety of popular books geared towards student enrichment, engagement, and creativity. Everyone can find something inspirational and relevant in his work and it is not just for art educators in the classroom. Come get inspired with us! |
Empower: What Happens When Students Own the Learning
Student choice is about more than just a menu option. It’s about student ownership. This includes ownership of the processes, the assessment, the strategies, and the metacognition. But how do we make this happen? How do we fit this into our standards and our curriculum map? Dr. John Spencer is a former middle school teacher and current college professor who is passionate about seeing kids reach their creative potential. John is on a mission to see teachers unleash the creative potential in all of their students so that kids can be makers, designers, artists, and engineers. He regularly explores research, interviews educators, deconstructs systems, and studies real-world examples of design thinking in action. He shares these insights in books, blog posts, journal articles, free resources, animated videos, and podcasts. In Spencer’s second year of teaching, he used design thinking for a student-centered documentary project. Everything changed. He spent the next decade on a journey to empower students to become creative thinkers and problem-solvers. This meant mural projects, service learning projects, designing STEM camps, and creating coding projects. He also helped design his school district’s STEM courses and digital journalism course. Along the way, he helped develop the student-friendly LAUNCH Cycle, a design thinking framework for K-12 students. He is the co-author of the bestselling books Launch and Empower. In 2013, he spoke at the White House, sharing a vision for how to empower students to be future-ready through creativity and design thinking. John Spencer has led workshops and delivered keynotes around the world. |
We will have:
Plenty of opportunities and room to network and have a great time! It is going to be so much FUN! |
What is a Task Party? Think Art Party with Tasks that you choose to complete an activity. For example:
Can you just do what you want? yes... you do you... List of things to bring: (if you want)

Lodging and Travel We want to be sure lodging isn't a barrier to your conference attendance. We have the Heathman Lodge as our Conference Hotel. It is an 8 minute drive (or an easy bus ride or Corporate Ride-Share). The Heathman Lodge has King & 2 Queen bed rooms available for $114 a night with WAEA22 code, but book soon. Call 360.254.3100 and ask for the WAEA2022 room block Below are some other options that may be economically viable that we hope will help. Air BnB is another option. VRBO is another option. |
In order to limit our carbon foot-print, our gas bills, and extend our connections on the drive in...and ensure transportation and lodging is not a barrier to your conference attendance. We have provided the Ride-Share and/or Room-Share Survey to bridge connections across our regions. Please use this Survey to provide your contact information with others. Once submitted, you will receive the link in your email to the spreadsheet in order to connect with others. (WAEA will not be held responsible for the connections made, the laughter shared, art discussed, and the collaboration that ensues from this curation of requests.) |
