March 2024 - This is the sixth qualitative survey conducted with the Washington Art Education Association (WAEA) serving as the host arts education organization since the pandemic in efforts to determine the impact on arts education access, inclusion, instruction, and staffing in the basic education arts subjects that include: dance, media arts, music, theater, and visual arts.
*This survey will be open from March 1, 2024, through April 13, 2024, in an attempt to gather responses from all circles of influence in arts education and arts professionals and teaching artists, including students, regarding the status of arts education and artificial intelligence (AI) - nationally and internationally. The Washington Art Education Association (WAEA) is again the host state arts education organization for the distribution and gathering of this data. Important: All 13 survey responses are anonymous and confidential. *Questions 1 - 12 are required. Seven questions are selected responses, and five questions are constructed responses. Question 13 is an optional constructed response question. The survey takes approximately 5-7 minutes to answer. Thank you to WAEA and to Co-Presidents Rebecca Broyles and Shannon Brennon, past president Jessica Chickadel Garrick, and WAEA Splatter Magazine Editor Cheyenne Gillett Whitney for their on-going support via WAEA for this important research gathering survey regarding the current status of arts education and the impact of AI. *Survey data will be reported in upcoming WAEA Splatter Magazine issues for reference and advocacy for arts education, as well as in other educational publications and presentations regarding this time in history, in efforts to support and report about arts education and educational practices regarding the impact of AI programs on arts education and arts creation, teaching, learning, assessment, and organizations. The survey will be disseminated via social media and personal email contacts to arts educators, state and national arts education organizations, museum and higher education professionals, teaching artists and arts professionals, and state arts education administrators. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and thoughts about arts education and AI via this survey. Please feel invited to share it with others in your circles of influence for their input. We hope to have over 200 responses from all arts education circles of influence regarding arts education for all learners. Questions should be addressed to Dr. AnnRené Joseph, WAEA Research and Knowledge Division Representative at: [email protected] or [email protected] Survey will be open from March 1 through April 13, 2024. We’re about 8 weeks from the deadline for entry to the Washington State High School Photography Competition. If you did not receive the 2024 information, please e-mail me and I’ll send a copy, or visit www.kenmorecamera.com and click the purple WSHSPC logo that is located at the bottom of the homepage to find the link to the 2024 competition rules pdf. When you see a photograph that you feel is a good candidate for the contest, ask the student to print a second copy and then place it in a file for later. This will eliminate the last-minute rush to collect student work to submit to the contest. If instructors or students have any questions about a photograph, or in which category it should be placed, please contact me and I will gladly help. Now is a good time to begin reviewing past WSHSPC exhibits with your students. Visit https://kenmorecamera.com/wshspc-galleries/ to view WSHSPC exhibits from 2008 - 2023. These exhibits are great tools for your students to see the qualities judges look for when selecting images. I’d like to thank Jason Porter, Anna Allegro, and Yaoyao Lui of the Seattle Art Museum for their help with a very successful exhibit at the Seattle Asian Art Museum from December 3rd through January 21st. The space and exhibit looked wonderful and I’m so appreciative of the opportunity to showcase the work of high school students in such a prestigious gallery. We have already secured the space for this upcoming December and January! For more information about SAAM visit https://www.seattleartmuseum.org/visit/seattle-asian-art-museum We had a great Photography Instructor Roundtable on January 20th. We had a thorough discussion on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how some photography educators are addressing AI in the classroom. A big thanks to Kenmore Camera for providing the space, and Mike Wewer for co-hosting. We’re discussing moving the Roundtable to Fall, and I’d like to hear from photography instructors about your opinion of when would be the best time to offer it. Please let me know by contacting me at [email protected]. Edmonds Arts Festival Photography Opportunity An opportunity for students to submit photographs to the upcoming Edmonds Arts Festival. The cowboys use this trail to bring mules up and down the canyon to bring supplies to points along the trail. The whole hike I had been taking pictures and waiting for the perfect moment to capture the different cowboys on the trail and when we stopped for a break, I saw this perfect moment lined up and I took my photo. I am honored to be a part of this exhibit!” Sophia Pearson, Inglemoor High School Questions... email Kelly Atkinson Executive Director Washington State High School Photography Competition [email protected] Winter edition of sublime–an e-publication celebrating student photography. link to the .pdf here.
