OSPI Migrant & Arts Education Programs State Conference Art of Belonging Summer Conference When: August 15-16, 2024 Where: Yakima Convention Center FREE! 6 free Clock Hours Provided. REGISTER TODAY! Art of Belonging is a free conference put on through the partnership between OSPI Arts Program, the Migrant Education Program, and the various Arts Education Programs around the state, including the Washington Art Education Association. This is our second year of collaborating with the Arts Education Programs and embracing the theme “Art of Belonging.” The goal of this collaboration is to provide educators, administrators, advocates, and other staff with an opportunity to reimagine how they serve migratory students and their families in Washington state with an emphasis on the Arts. WAEA is hosting 4 sessions, all facilitated by Hiep Nguyen, from Circle Painting and Draw all You Can. He is being assisted by Jessica Holloway, Visual Arts Coordinator and Educator in Bellevue Public Schools. All 4 sessions are on different techniques so you can learn from the WAEA and Hiep, or you can hop over to the sessions that the Theater, Music, Migrant, and Dance Programs are providing. Keynote Speakers. ENRIQUE CERNA-Conference Host Enrique Cerna worked in Seattle media for more than four decades. You may recognize him from his work as a reporter, producer and host for KOMO Radio and Television, KING Television and KCTS Public Television. IDRIS GOODWIN—Opening General Session Idris Goodwin is a multiple award-winning playwright, breakbeat poet, content creator and arts champion. A 2021 United States Artist Fellow, Goodwin is recognized as a culture bearer who celebrates community values and cultivates histories with care. Sample of work: The Name Game: How Idris Became Eddy, Why it Matters. MATIKA WILBUR—Awards Luncheon, Workshop, Book Signing, Displays Matika is a local Swinomish Artist most known for publishing Project 562. Matika will deliver a 50-minute keynote address, conduct two (2) sixty minute hour workshops for an audience of 25 participants for each workshop, will be available for a Book signing, and her Cubic Art displays will be featured throughout the conference. JOSE IÑIGUEZ—Closing General Session A gifted musician and award-winning Latin music artist. Jose was born and raised in a farm working family in Mattawa, WA, has lived and experienced language, economic and cultural barriers many of our migrant students' experience, yet he overcame and is now a successful artist and entrepreneur.
