The NAEA National Convention is an annual event providing substantive professional development services that include the advancement of knowledge in all sessions, events, and activities for the purpose of improving visual arts instruction in American schools. As such, it is the world’s largest art education convention.

The three-day Convention includes over 1,000 participatory workshops, panels, seminars for job-alike groups…research reports, discussions, exhibits, and tours…keynote addresses by world-acclaimed educators, artists, researchers, and scholars…with the opportunity to connect with your colleagues from all over the world. Each year, some 110-200 exhibitor booths displaying the latest art textbooks, high-tech software, prints, slides, curriculum materials, equipment, and programs, as well as the latest studio and art history media are made available for examination and review by art educator delegates.

Join us for OSPI’s Annual Superintendent’s High School Art Show!

Now in its 51st year, the Art Show celebrates the creativity and artistic skills of high school students from across Washington. Student artworks are selected for awards by Governor Jay Inslee, State Superintendent Chris Reykdal, Arts Associations across the state, and more!

This year’s Art Show is hosted by two student artists and will feature performances from musical theatre, a chamber string ensemble and Mariachi music.

Art of Belonging is a free conference put on through the partnership between OSPI Arts Program, the Migrant Education Program, and the various Arts Education Programs around the state, including the Washington Art Education Association.

This is our second year of collaborating with the Arts Education Programs and embracing the theme “Art of Belonging.” The goal of this collaboration is to provide educators, administrators, advocates, and other staff with an opportunity to reimagine how they serve migratory students and their families in Washington state with an emphasis on the Arts.

WAEA is hosting 4 sessions, all facilitated by Hiep Nguyen, from Circle Painting and Draw all You Can. He is being assisted by Jessica Holloway, Visual Arts Coordinator and Educator in Bellevue Public Schools.

All 4 sessions are on different techniques so you can learn from the WAEA and Hiep, or you can hop over to the sessions that the Theater, Music, Migrant, and Dance Programs are providing.

Keynote Speakers.
ENRIQUE CERNA-Conference Host
Enrique Cerna worked in Seattle media for more than four decades. You may recognize him from his work as a reporter, producer and host for KOMO Radio and Television, KING Television and KCTS Public Television. 
IDRIS GOODWIN—Opening General Session
Idris Goodwin is a multiple award-winning playwright, breakbeat poet, content creator and arts champion. A 2021 United States Artist Fellow, Goodwin is recognized as a culture bearer who celebrates community values and cultivates histories with care. Sample of work: The Name Game: How Idris Became Eddy, Why it Matters.
MATIKA WILBUR—Awards Luncheon, Workshop, Book Signing, Displays
Matika is a local Swinomish Artist most known for publishing Project 562. Matika will deliver a 50-minute keynote address, conduct two (2) sixty minute hour workshops for an audience of 25 participants for each workshop, will be available for a Book signing, and her Cubic Art displays will be featured throughout the conference.
JOSE IÑIGUEZ—Closing General Session
A gifted musician and award-winning Latin music artist. Jose was born and raised in a farm working family in Mattawa, WA, has lived and experienced language, economic and cultural barriers many of our migrant students' experience, yet he overcame and is now a successful artist and entrepreneur.

The WAEA Hosted Workshops:

THE JOY AND STRESS OF TEACHING: HOW TO STAY PRESENT, ENERGIZED, AND SUSTAINABLY HAPPY
Teaching art is joyful and challenging! This session will provide art teachers with mindful strategies, calming techniques, and resources that, when put into everyday practice, help alleviate teacher stress and support teacher sustainability before, during, and after class. Our aim is true self-care that can be continued with participants leaving refreshed and energized. Be ready to move and participate!

BUILDING BELONGING THROUGH SHARED RESPONSIBILITY AND ARTISTRY
Educators, join our Circle Painting workshop to explore a transformative art project that fosters connection, mindfulness, and belonging. Learn to guide students in creating meaningful, collaborative artwork on paper plates, representing self, family, and community. This impactful tool enhances relationships, focus, and shared responsibility in your classroom.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF IMAGINATION USING THE DRAW ALL YOU CAN CARDS.
Uncover an incredible drawing method that empowers anyone to express themselves through art! Engaging, hands-on, and tried-and-tested techniques ensure participants achieve drawing success. This workshop instructs in artistic skills and cultivates mindfulness, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Harnessing the power of imagination alongside the Draw All You Can cards, we will collaboratively craft personal and communal artwork. Together, we will nurture a sense of unity and inclusivity. This class serves as a source of affirmation and inspiration for all participants. Gain invaluable drawing and mindfulness techniques applicable to your work with adults and children.

DAYC VISUAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP: EMPOWERING LANGUAGE SKILLS AND HEALING
Help students process trauma and tell their stories through Draw All You Can (DAYC) and “Drawing from Disaster” cards. This workshop integrates Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) with visual storytelling, using activities like the 4Ps, Story Spine, and writing prompts to enhance articulation. Teachers will learn to boost student engagement, vocabulary, and narrative skills by creating storyboards, storybooks, and journals. Students will gain creativity, storytelling abilities, and language proficiency. Integrate visual storytelling to transform language learning and provide therapeutic benefits for all.

A bit about Hiep Nguyen...

With over two decades of experience making and teaching art, Hiep Nguyen has facilitated numerous community-based art projects for thousands worldwide. Known for his dynamic, fun-loving, and non-judgmental facilitation style, Hiep's passion for making collaborative art is contagious. His unique participatory art process has impacted lives and transformed hundreds of empty walls and canvases.
He is a frequently sought-after master teacher and keynote speaker at art education associations and universities. In 2007, Hiep founded Circle Painting, a non-profit art organization whose mission is to make art accessible and promote mental health and teamwork through collaborative art initiatives.
